Weekly Photo Challenge ~ Simple Elements ~ NoCZ 2012

Elemental Building Blocks

We live in a simple world, made of simple elements. Air, Water, Fire Earth. Earth, Wind, Fire, Water. Breath, Breathing…
I live in a friendly, abundantly beautiful universe. (Oh yes, I judge… LOL! It’s our job…! Yes, I can have opinions…)

Is this a photo of sunrise or sunset? Does it matter? I saw this view and at first thought of building blocks… they could be stone and yet they are snow. Is this a wall being built or falling down? Does it matter?

Simple elements, arranged in order by nature, Air, Fire, Water, Earth… Grounded and uplifting. How can this be? Dichotomous.. light dark rising falling … so simple, so mysterious.

I saw the repetition of shapes – in the line along the top of the blocks, softly repeated in the light, and then again in the darker sky… and in between the blocks a tiny spot of light, a dot where the rising/setting sun punctuated a sentence of gorgeous light.

The very first handmade book I made contained one poem and a simple drawing in blue on white: “It’s all right for there to be some places left in mystery…”

Is it sunrise or sunset…? you get to choose. What if it is both? What if it a just the pigment of your imagination, or mine? What is real, anyway?

Yesterday, as I was leaving for work, I took a moment to hug a neighbor, who hugged me back with warmth and love, even though it was 20F outside. The bark was warm against my cheek and body and we were happy ~ together. I clearly heard “Thank you for your kindness.” Surprised, I drove to work singing and the rest of my day was filled with love.
Yes, it’s alright for there to be some places left in mystery… and out of my comfort zone once again. Telling the truth. Yes, I talk to trees, and they speak to me from roots deep in the earth. When I am grounded, I can stand tall and reach for the sky… and breathe. Earth, Air, Fire, Water. Elementary, my dear, Watson.

May your day be filled with simple, mystery, choices, surprises… love.

Weekly Photo Challenge ~ Simple ~ NoCZ 2012

 Possibilities... somewhere seeds

Simple - Beach Grass + Snow

This week’s photo challenge is Simple.
I like simple. Simple is easy – for me. KISS – Keep It Simple, Silly!

The NoCZ 2012 Challenge of week 1 has not been forgotten… posting some of my favorite photos, those I consider simply beautiful. This photo, taken on a sunny snowy day, minimum wind, allowed the snow to stay on top of the seeds. I saw this and thought once again of the changing seasons, and how each one holds possibilities for the next. The frozen seeds eventually blow and land somewhere on the beach, plant themselves and grow, repeating cycles. A simple image with sun, water, life, all in a light moment.
NoCZ 2012 week 2 – sharing my work more, with more people. Locally, orders now taking more time to finish and I feel so slow…. even with 2 snow days and much snow plowing.
Week 3 – without stating it, which now I do, is to let people know my work is for sale and how to purchase…. which has been fun and problematic. How to get it done and delivered, while I work, plow snow, and allow for drying time. It is all becoming part of a discipline process, and more baby steps. One thing at a time.
Week 4 – This week, acknowledging others including myself, saying thank you to followers, customers, friends.
Writing – a bio, vitae, for publicity purposes at work, I found myself saying things about me that were true and yet it was challenging to sing my own praises…. and yet I found the words. ‘A graduate of … and … an internationally collected artist, still maintaining an actively creative studio working in a variety of media, and has been recognized as an innovative teacher…” Credentials. Credibility.

That was not so simple. I like simple, and yet no one here knew. I always believed my work would speak for itself and I was to be invisible. Not any more, I guess. My work travels ahead of me. I recently realized and stated aloud… I am now allowing my art work to create itself… conciously, and allowing myself to be more myself. I call it having fun.

Life can be simple and fun when we allow it… May your day be filled with simply being. Thank you for reading, acknowledging, getting personal.

Postcard from the Woods ~ Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice – the coming of the Light and Retreat of the Dark ~ in the Northern Hemisphere. The day was bright and sunny, cold, with snow still on the ground. I have been preparing for this for months – storing some of the best firewood carefully to keep it dry. Preparations – cleansing, cleaning, clearing, and moving some snow. Once again, I had a ceremony here in the woods and it was fabulous, moving, touching, sacred, cleansing, funny, shared with friends in person and others in spirit. All day the fire burned brightly in the sacred space where regrets, mistakes, the dark stuff, are written down and burned in the fire. Forgiveness, gratitude, hopes, dreams, intentions expressed in all directions to people, friends, the universe, and of course, God, for blessings (even those in disguise), miracles, love…. written down, placed in the fire and carried into the universe by gentle breezes.
I hope at some point in the yesterday of Winter Solstice, you too, were able to take time to honor and acknowledge the passage of the seasons, the year, the return of light and retreat of the dark, your growth and expansion ~ and the people in your life who teach, guide, love and share. My lists were long and if you are reading this, you were on my list – of blessings in my life. ♥

This is where the fire burned – the contrast of light and dark before the fire was built and lit…

Ring of Fire - Before

Last year’s total lunar eclipse of the full moon on Winter Solstice was amazing – see When the Universe Aligns. This year, the Universe aligned perfectly once again.

Weekly Photo Challenge ~ Fall: Marsh Magic

Yup… It’s still Fall. While blazing colors are still evolving in the hardwoods, there are other, less obvious, color changes in the trees, woods, and marshes nearby. Interspersed in the 20 miles of glowing color washed forest walls on the drive to work, expanses of marshland are quietly, softly and subtly making the transition from summer greens to yellow greens and gold. The Tamaracks may appear to some to be dying, as their tiny needles yellow, preparing to fall. Tamaracks are the one evergreen species that shed their leaves, needles, each fall.

Golden Tamarack

These trees, these places are some of my favorites. Not the crazy quilt of color, not as bright and blazing, and nonetheless beautiful. I find the subtle contrasts quietly taking my breath away as I stop to notice… gold all around.

May your day be filled with Nature’s Magic and breathtaking beauty.

Post-A-Day 2011 – Postcard from Spring

2011 April 2

While others share their signs of Spring
Snow here still hides most everything…
Yet, Spring brings light, not dull and gray
Clear Light begins to end the day

Crisp Clear Light

Light seen through woods, ‘tween trees
Brings contrast to the world we sees!
Colors in both bark and trunk
Lifting winter’s tired funk

Coyote Jokester

Coyote jokesters jump and play
Hide and seek in woods today
Across the frozen snow they trot
North then south, they slink and plot

Superior’s blocks of ice and snow
In sunlight cast their crystal glow
With each and every tiny drip
Spring loosens Winter’s chilly grip.

Winter dripping away...

While Water laughs a music score
Walls of ice still line the shore
Sparkling in a slow retreat
Giving way to patient heat

Crystal Walls

Sunshine! clear and crisp ‘til night
Then washing snow in sleepy light
Water droplets, ripples, flow
Signs of Spring beneath snow glow

Beneath the sheets of ice and snow...

2011 3 April ~ and today it snows once more! Spring comes slowly here. May your days be filled with sparkling light!

When the Universe Aligns…

Aligned in the Heavens...

Sun, Earth, Moon

December 21, 2010
Such beauty and power in the alignment of Sun, Earth, Moon, with the Winter Solstice on a Full Moon morning. Blessed with the clearest skies, this is a tiny capsule of views and energy of the night.

Phone calls in the middle of the night, friends sharing their view. Clear here, Cloudy there.

I had given up on getting photos, feeling like equipment, my skills, were inadequate for the spectular. (That old “not enough” not good enough” troll) At 2:37 am, as I finally snuggled into bed, the phone rang. A really good friend called and offered a tripod, saying
“Betsy! You have to do this!”
“I have to get up and go to work!” I protested.
“It’s a once in a lifetime event, you CAN’T miss it!” he shouted…and a few more choice words… 15 minutes later, I was in a new location, with camera mounted on a gun tripod resting on my truck, in freshly plowed crunchy snow shooting this miraculous moon.

Alignment. Alignment with the Universe. Alignment with loving friends and supporters. The Universe aligns and we can’t miss it. I am grateful for all.

Are the photos spectacular? Not in my book, I see the flaws, the imperfections, all of those that didn’t work out, and yet, this night’s sky was spectacular and I’m glad I was awake and alive and not willing to miss it. I am glad to be able to share it with those who had clouds, or rain, or needed to sleep. I am glad to be able to share this with those who support, love, and believe in me and my dreams. (And I am glad to share this with me.)

I missed a day of work. It was worth it. Called in, told the truth. Choice, go to a job and miss this opportunity, or share what is special to me. The photos are not perfect. This post will not be perfect. I have to get to my job and this is my work as I celebrate light and color and life.

Above the photo, the words read:
“Winter Solstice 12/21/2010 Night Watch~Once in a Lifetime…Witnessing This Miracle…THIS Event…Night Light Show in the Heavens. Did you hear the applause, feel the energy circles… Bouncing Love to the Moon and around the Globe.
Peace on Earth, Goodwill toward everyone. We, on this planet, in this Universe are truly beautifully, bountifully blessed. Namaste.”

My wish for 2011. As we share one moon, one planet, one Universe, peace. Peace and Love for each other. Kindness. Kindness to self and others. Appreciation and gratitude for our differences.

Will have to add and edit later… Now it is time to get to the other job. For now, it pays a bill. Alignment… alignment with love.

Light Growing…

Sunpath... Irresistable Invitation

Light beams beckon “Follow me”
Enter this magic play
Waking early in the forest
As dawn begins the day.

Tree curtains stand, darkened, wet
Frame players in this forest set
Lightshafts dance through canopy
Invite and light the path “this way”…
